Let's Play 20 Questions with Kevin Carpet

by Penny Dreadful

The fetish parties in New York City and Philadelphia seem to have lower bars—or just a help up with Kevin Carpet.  His trampling has gone beyond a fetish to performance art and, interestingly enough, led to him being a DJ.

PD: When did you first start being a carpet?

KC: When I was 2 or 3 years old, I--as we all probably did--played house.  There was a mother, a father and I always wanted just to be the tiger rug—really.

PD: You did a performance piece where you were wrapped up in a rug on the Lower East Side. What was up with that?

KC: I was being filmed and written about for a documentary.

PD: What famous people have stepped on you?

KC: Sometimes they didn’t even know it.  ‘Cause in the old Limelight days, at Disco 2000, I was

covered head to toe under the carpets in the V.I.P lounges, but my head was under this table where there was this big dollhouse on it.  So Joan Jett, Christina Applegate, Madonna, Janine Garofalo stepped on me. I'm sure there’s many more but I remember seeing them.

PD: Got any dirt on them?

KC: (Laughs) Nope.

PD: When did you first get to be the bar mat? That makes for a whole new meaning to, “Step up to the bar,” no?

KC: I got a grant to be a carpet in the 90's, where I had to be totally covered, where NO ONE knew I was there except the owners of the club.  So I was treated like a REAL CARPET.  At the time, I had six or seven people standing on me.  Usually, in the beginning of the night, I had mostly big, college guys on me the first hour or so until the fun, dancing crowd came.

Then at a party, a friend asked if I wanted to lie in front of the bar. I did and it was fun.  At first many people saw me in my all black outfit and hat and goggles and didn’t know if I was real or not.  Seriously people even bent down to touch me and kick me and if I moved they were shocked.

PD: Gettin’ kind of popular with all the fetish/goth ladies, no?

KC: Well, that’s a fun crowd and they are more often open-minded for new things and experiences.

PD: What are your favorite shoes to have on your carpet body? What’s your favorite body part to be stepped on?

KC: Well since the 80's, when I did this in Tompkins Square Park with my punk rock friends, I always loved Converse, biker boos, and combat boots.  Now, I still love them, but added to the equation are goth boots, Uggs, Creepes, Vans, heels, and Keds.

PD: You’ve been passed around as a dungeon-training subject. How does it feel to be in demand like that?

KC: Wow, how did you know that? (Laughs) It’s nice to be needed and help others out and it feels good to be asked.

PD: What do you think of candy? I love candy.

KC: As Homer Simpson would say, "MMMMMM, candy. . ."

PD: Now you’re DJing. How did you get involved with that?

KC: I was running the list at a few popular clubs many years ago, and the list closes at 3am.  I still had to wait till 4am to get paid, so I would hang with my dj friend.  He taught me how to mix and blend songs.  Back then it was all records.  Damn, four heavy crates just for a night.  It’s a breeze nowadays with the cd book. Doing the doors at these popular clubs, I got many things and free music was one of them. So I built my collection and the club gave me a few nights to dj when I wasn’t doing the door.

PD: Where are you Djing these days and what type of music do you play?

KC: Mainly 80's goth. industrial , rock, and metal.

PD: What’s up with Max Fisch these days?

KC: I don’t go on there as much these days.

PD: Do you have any time to be a carpet these days?

KC: I found these great bars where I get to lay behind the bar for the bartends as they work, but when I do this I have to lay on my stomach to make it easier for them.

I also go to many events like BYTE, a monthly, and other events here in NYC and Philly and Connecticut.

I really want to be a carpet at dorm parties or raves where people can bounce and use me as a moon walk mat.

PD: What are your limits as a carpet?

KC: Hmmmm, as of yet, none.

PD: Since you’re doing so many different types of play with all the dungeon training, what are your limits that way?

KC: I just stick to trampling and being a carpet.  In that matter, no limits.  Hey, I'm Kevin Carpet!
